Canadian single malts???

Are there any Canadian single malts, as opposed to their blends?

Just curious.

TIA!

There is one scotch-style Canadian single malt called Glen Breton. I haven't tasted it but most of what I've read indicates it's way overpriced for its quality. Try googling on it for details.

But there's a huge world of Canadian-style whiskeys, a handful of which are small-batch, pot-still kinds of products.

There was a Yahoo discussion group on this topic -- it's still there, but inactive -- that had some real expertise among the posters. You can read the archives by going to

and clicking on "view all."

You'll find discussions of pretty well every interesting Canadian whiskey out there. I highly recommend it if the topic interests you. RealBushido (who used to post here as well) and blackkeno are among the posters to look for.

I think the workings of the Glen Breton distillery were made in Scotland. The distillery is in Nova Scotia. I have not heard great things about the product, though.

I have heard there have been other Canadian Single Malts in the distant past (before prohibition). There was supposedly one other recent single malt ('80s) for the Japanese market named Glen Okopogo. I don't know of anyone who has seen, let alone tasted it. Knowledge of its existence is attributed to Jim Murray though.

By the way, I still check the beautyeh site on Yahoo every few days and reply to many of the posts, so feel to review its archives and post your thoughts.

Sincerely, John
