ever had any of these single malts?

Isle of Jura Fettercairn Dalmore Tamnavulin

If so how do you rate them?

I find the Jura 10 to be bland, very bland. Sometimes it has an aftertaste of a cheap blend -- to me. I have not tried the Jura Superstition, and I hear it's much better.

I like the Dalmore 10 and the Dalmore Cigar Malt. Not peaty nor smoky, but malty and smooth.

From a friend whose taste I trust, concerning a Jura tasting this past weekend in Denver:

==================================== ">For your $20 tasting fee you will experience four Isle of

I made the tasting. It was quite a lot of fun but it didn't leave me with a great desire to spend the rest of my life sipping Isle of Jura.

The 10 year old is the Isle of Jura that most everyone has tried. It has always struck me as somewhat harsh and that was my reaction again this time. The only person at our table who really liked it was the same woman who thought all single malts came from Ireland.

The 16 year old was my favorite. Also the table favorite, for that matter. It has just a hint of peat which, according to the distiller, came from the water, not the process.

The 21 year old was sweeter (which surprised me) and more full-bodied. It had an interesting flavor but not one that I particularly liked.

It turns out that Superstition is a blend of two Isle of Jura products: the 10 year old and a Laphroaig/Lagavulin style single malt that's not available in the US. Here I was disappointed. The distiller described the flavor as being "fruitcake" and I don't like fruitcake. That may have led to a certain predisposition not to like the blend, but it seemed like a number of flavors were at war on my tongue. What I'd really like to try would be the malt that's not available in the US but that wasn't one of our options."

=================================== I like the Dalmore 12, 15, and 21 quite a bit postprandially. Proportionally smoother and more restrained as you go up the line. The 21 has nowhere near the sherry of, say, Glenfarclas 21, nor quite the complexity.

The Tamnavulin I've tasted have been quite like Glenlivet clones.

Fettercairn I've never sampled.

The only two I've tried are the Jura and the Tamnavulin. The Jura is a good, solid single malt. Not outstanding (although that might just be my taste) but perfectly repectable.

The only Tamnavulin I had was nigh undrinkable.

Uzytkownik "Marvin" napisal:

Isle of Jura - drinkable, but tends to get better with age. Go for the 16yo or 21yo if they're within your price range. Superstition is also well worth a try. Fettercairn - I just wish they closed this one down instead of, say, Brora, Port Ellen or St. Magdalene... Dalmore - by far top of the above list. Easily detectable sherry influences, even for a novice palate. Tamnavulin - nothing to write home about. I ran out of my last bottle ages ago and not planning to restock.

Thanks for the early review. Picked up a bottle of each recently. Waiting to finish a bottle before opening another.

The Jura is a very gentle dram. Not particularily to my taste but still enjoyable, if in the right mood. The fettercairn that I tried was very malty and reminded me of Glenfiddich. The best of these imo is the Dalmore. Citrus flavours particularily oranges are at the forefront.... liquid marmalade is my remembrance of Dalmore.

Tamnuvulin I have yet to try.

I've shied away from Jura, Fettercain and Tamnavulin OBs in the 10 yr range based on a number of consistent reviews of these malts. To my tastes, the Dalmore 12 is a great buy, and the Dalmore Cigar Malt is quite good. These are good, decently priced beginner malts that offer excellent value compared to some other choices in the price range.

Again, based on reviews from experienced drammers, some of the older (expensive) bottles of the other 3 can be quite good, if overpriced.
