How much is too much?

I'm wondering how much scotch you guys drink when you sit down and drink some scotch, say at night before you go to bed? I'm slowly learning to respect this stuff. Last night I poured what totaled about half or 2/3 a cup of Glenlivet 12. I paid for this morning when I had my head in the toilet. Do I just have a very sensitive stomach to scotch or is what I drunk just too much? Do you just poor yourself one drink and that's it? How much do you drink when you sit down and just want to enjoy it?

Also, is scotch wealthy for you like they say wine is?

Thanks!

I average between 1 and 3 drams at a sitting and I drink rather regularly. It is a part of my ritual that includes smoking a pipe and reading.

Anything in moderation! If you are getting plastered each night, it may be too much!

Can you define a dram for me? How many ounces is it?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what a "dram" is, because technically a "fluid dram" is 1/8 of a fluid ounce, which is barely a sip. More abstractly, a "dram" is a "small quantity to drink", paraphrased from some online dictionary.

BUT, just so we all appreciate the volumes correctly, I drink approximately two shots' worth at a go.

In any case, regarding headaches: I have a fast metabolism and alcohol hits me like a brick, so as a rule I drink about 10oz of water after each drink. This seems to take care of next-day issues up to about four or five drinks. You might want to give this a try, too.

Best regards, Justin

For me, it is a little under 2 ounces.

Ok, after doing a little searching on the net I found 8 drams equal 1 ounce or 1 dram equals 1/8 ounce. I just measured how much I drunk last night - about six ounces. Two more ounces would have been 8 drams - YIKES! No wonder I got sick. All I did was fill my whisky cup up about 1/3 full two times. It sounds like one dram isnt that much.

LMAO. Or 64 drams, apothecary's measure. OK, VF, You've figured out the important part: a 'dram' is how much whisky YOU think is a reasonably sized libation. A drachma on the other hand is only $.19!

Is scotch easier or harder on the stomach than Jack Daniels? I know if I was drinking the same amount of old number 7 I wouldn't have got sick. Maybe my stomach is just not use to it.

I have a Bowmore flask that holds six ounces, and I take it with me when I travel. It takes two to three nights to drink that, each night's serving taking over an hour to finish and then followed by a 24oz bottle of water.

I guess for me, six ounces would be a "binge."

Try just one of those in a few days. See how you react. Remember that drinking for the taste is more important than drinking for the sensation.

(And if you want to get completely wasted, I'd suggest margaritas. Tasty, and very easy to end up without any control over your musculature.)

Slow and steady wins the race. Best of luck!

I don't have an answer to that, VF, but I know that (for me) Scotch is much easier on the palate. Have you tried Old Forester as well as JD?

I find Jack hotter on the throat and chest while its going down but easier on the stomach in the morning (if I drink more than I should it doesn't come back up). Scotch is just the opposite, easier on the throat and chest but harder or heavier on the stomach in the morning. But I've been drinking Jack a lot more than scotch. Last night I was trying to take just a few more sips of the scotch so I wouldn't have to poor any out, but my stomach and gut was telling me I had my fill. But my eyes were telling me I shouldn't be having this problem because I was only on my second glass, and I only fill the glass up 1/3 of the way. Next time I will listen to my stomach.

Oh, I don't want to drink scotch to get drunk, I want to drink it to enjoy all the different tastes. I can't wait to try Glenfiddich and compare it to Glenlivet 12. And after that Dalwhinnie. I'm hopping I will be able to notice a different taste in them all.

Maybe your stomach was empty? Drinking alcohol with an empty stomach is never a good idea. Or you ate something wrong?
