I had the opportunity to try a glass of Johnny Walker Blue at a local restaurant and I was floored by it's smoothness. After trying a very short list of whiskey's in my lifetime, I've finally found the style and taste I am after. Of course, JWBL is way too expensive for everyday drinking.
Is there a single-malt equivalent that has the same smooth texture for less money? Forgive the newbie type question.
Robert, You could try Royal Lochnagar which is the base for JWB,there are many others out there. The Speysides are the best place to start with Glenlivet's,Glenfiddich's(try the Toasted Oak or the Solera Reserve first,I find the 12 a bit thin and firery for my tastes),Glenrothes and Mallcan 15 Fine Oak. The Island Malts,Highland Park is the all time classic malt, the
12 is quite easy to find and is very good.Jura is OK and Talisker is not a malt for new starters(but is great stuff). The Highland Malts,Glenmorangie(who have brought out a new range at the moment,I have a bottle of the Quita Ruban),Dalwhinnie 15 and The Dalmore are very good. Islay Malts are quite brillant and are problely the most drunk on this NG,but are not the best place to start, unless you want to jump in at the deep end. These can be very smokey and strong in taste, and may put you of for life. I have found that age gives you the smoothness you seek,so try anything over 10 years old.Hope this helps and kick starts this post,it is alway good to help a newbie. Drew
