Hello, everyone. I have a question that maybe this group could help me with. I've only ever tasted one scotch and quite liked it, but have no idea what kind it was. So, my question is, not knowing anything about scotch types, what would be a good one for someone who doesn't have much experience with it? A good entry level scotch, moderately priced, that will give me a taste of what good scotch is. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Josh, you're asking a group of people that for the most part drink single malt scotch of which there are hundreds to choose from, as opposed to a blended scotch, of which there are multiple of hundreds to choose from. My simple suggestion would be to first learn the different between the two. For example single malts are usually more expensive than blended as well as each one usually having a uniquely different taste from its counterparts. Blended scotch sort of all have the same basic flavor components and is harder (IMHO) to discern uniqueness amongst them. There are plenty of people in this NG that will agree and disagree with statements I make which is what is very good about this NG. You can sit around and learn a tremendous amount about single malts in particular and scotch in general as well as other forms of drink.
So in a nutshell, if you ask 1000 people what is a good "starter" scotch you are going to get about 900 different and legitimate opinions. So ask, learn, drink and experience the wonderful and wide world of scotch. Good luck on a wonderful road yet to be traveled.
glenrothes.any. if you like fruity tastes this is the one. for me anyway but like a previous poster has said everyone has a favourite and there are a lot of favourites out there.
oh BTW hello newsgroup, ive been lurking for some time now but this is a first post :O)
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I think I'm going to try a bottle of Highland Park 12. I'll probably check the bars as well to try some different ones without committing to a whole bottle. Thanks!
