The Glenfaclas....that is the 17 year old....which I believe is only sold in the USA, Italy and the Far east (I may be wrong).......that is one that others have recommended and I would love to try

Don't confuse it with the much cheaper Aberlour 10, which is a decent but not terribly distinguished malt. It's the Aberlour a'bunhadh you want.

Let us know what you thought of it. I found it best with a few drops of water, and a bit overwhelming without.

Strangely, the a'bunadh has gone from my only whisky deemed too powerful for me to taste to my absolute favorite...although I have to admit that my favorite changes often. I guess I've grown into cask appreciation. I have determined that this is necessary to have in the rotation at all times.

It's true, Glendronach 15 has been discontinued and replaced with a Glendronach 12 that is also matured in refill sherry casks but is then transferred to bourbon casks for 6 months or so. The end result is a whisky that is a lot less sherried than the 15yo, a different animal really. I found the 15yo somewhat oversherried but I'm not excited about the 12yo either which is somewhat brittle and green appley on my palate (and bears no resemblance to their older 12yo Traditional which I really enjoyed and a slight peatiness).

What I really wish is that they would just come out with a bourbon matured Glendronach as I feel that this whisky really shines under this guise, particularly at older ages.

An interesting twist: one of the indie bottlers I visited this summer had me try a Glendronach 1990 matured in port wood that he was thinking of buying. A cotton candyish kind of whisky, pink like a rose not to my taste but hey, some out there could have something to look forward to!
