smoked fish??

Just reading the tasting notes on my Christmas bottle of Ardbeg 10, a really, really delightful malt. (Had to go to Florida to get it; not available here in North Carolina.

But at the end of these notes, it lists smoked fish. Noooooooo. Surely not.

Why not? I've always found single malts to go well with the taste of smoked fish.

A local independent supermarket in my small Rhode Island town hot-smokes salmon in their own smoking oven. Great stuff and it goes perfectly with Ardbeg. In fact, it's one of my favorite food/malt combos.

Yeah but .... does the whisky taste like the salmon? Hope not.

No danger of that--Ardbeg holds its own against any smoked food. Give it a try.

I can actually go one better than that. I acquired an old Ardbeg cask on my last visit to Scotland. I broke down the staves into 6 inch lengths, added 2 staves on top of a water smoker full of lump charcoal, and smoked 6 fresh water trout fillets for approx 2 hours. The flavour of the Ardbeg impregnated itself beautifully in the fish. Eaten with a wee dram! You couldn't buy that anywhere in the world.

Graeme (unless you came to my house)
