Islay Loch Inspires New Ardbeg Malt
A new premium expression of Ardbeg has been named after the loch on Islay that has supplied water to Ardbeg Distillery for centuries.
Ardbeg Uigeadail – pronounced Oog-a-dal – is the first permanent addition to the Ardbeg family of malts since the launch of Ardbeg ‘Lord of the Isles' in 2001. The name means ‘dark, mysterious place'.
For this latest expression of Ardbeg, a wide range of casks were sampled to create a whisky which was true to the traditional ‘house-style' of Ardbeg but which was different from the Ten Years Old and Lord of the Isles expressions.
The 1993 casks provide most of the smoky base of the whisky, while the 1990 casks lend some extra nutty and earthy depth. A final luscious sherry richness is provided by the inclusion of some much older, sherry cask matured Ardbeg.
According to master distiller, Bill Lumsden, the rarity of these older sherry casks makes Uigeadail very special. He added: "Uigeadail is a superb example of Ardbeg, yet very different from the flagship Ten Years Old. It's remarkably smooth with an intriguing balance of sweet, savoury and smoky flavours - in fact the sherried smokiness reminds me of a Christmas pudding on fire! I am confident it will be enjoyed by lovers of this distinctive Islay malt and prove a welcome addition to the range."
Non chill-filtered, Ardbeg Uigeadail is bottled at traditional strength with a typical ABV of 54.2% for maximum peat 'power' and flavour. More …../
Ardbeg Uigeadail is presented in an innovative flip-top gift box. With an expected market price of £34.99, it is available in the UK from Oddbins, specialist whisky shops and Ardbeg Distillery. The expression will be available from November in selected outlets in France, Germany and Italy, and will follow in the USA from spring 2004.

Tasting Notes
Ardbeg Uigeadail 54.2% abv
Colour Bright gold
Aroma Rich, sweet and smoky, this expression of Ardbeg is both intensely flavoured and well-rounded. At full strength, the aroma is a symphony of chocolate caramels and fudge with gentle smoke. Dried fruits (date and raisins) and smooth sherried notes are discovered followed by linseed, walnut oil and hints of leather.
With water, the deep smokiness increases in intensity, reminiscent of a Christmas pudding on fire. The herbal scent of pine woodlands emerge with cinnamon balls and mint humbugs.
Taste Full-flavoured and rich with an intriguing balance between sweet, savoury and smoky flavours. The mouthfeel is full, chewy and oily with a remarkably smooth effect.
The flavour is initially sweet with Christmas pudding smothered in treacle, followed by honey glazed smoked food, barbecue sauce and olives with a burst of tingly spices (cloves and wild mint).
Finish Long and smoky with treacle, olives and a hint of aniseed.
