Just for my curiousity: Seems that the list has a German origin, abreviation '9J' for 9 Jahre (9 Years) and 'alte Ausstattung' (old equipment) indicate this. Who has complied the list originally and on what sources is the list based ?

And really, who cares? Is it not the taste that we appreciate? Do we ask if the barley is fertilized by natural or man made fertilzer? Has the water been tested? Is the peat sterilized?

Let's move on to the more interesting things.

Might be the case. Still, artificial coloring in my opinion does not feel truthful.

Your deductions seem correct. "The List" is occasionally posted by "The Doctor" seperating alleged coloured whiskies from those that are supposed not to be artificially coloured. My oldest copy of "The List" originated from a german web address, though it usually is posted through google which makes it more anonymous. German law requires a foodstuff that contains artificial colouring to say so on the label. (I'm not sure that the law would require a product that wasn't artificially coloured to say that it *wasn't* artificially coloured, so perhaps a penny pinching producer might include a "Mit Farbstoff" or "Mit Zuckerkuloer" on a label whether the current whisky was coloured or not - rather than produce a new seperate sub market label. If the law were to require that un-coloured products have their colouring marked as absent the above would not apply, but I don't think that's the case.)

Someone - I don't think it was the ol' Doc himself but who knows? - compiled this list from that info or something similar and posts it periodically. It seems to be his dedicated crusade to spread this info in the expectation that true whisky lovers will rise up and demand an end to the practice of adjusting colour with e150a (spirit caramel) by boycotting all the artificially coloured whiskies. He seldom answers questions or comments, and some careful readers have found some possible errors in "The List". But the ol' Doc is not here to argue or quibble. He just posts his info and moves on. He's regarded as a troll by some; but as USENET trolls go, he's almost a gentleman - just a bit repetitive.

I'm not particularly troubled by caramel colouring, though if they asked me I'd rather they didn't do it. (Chillfiltering seems to take a bigger hit at the flavor than artificial colour does.) I have two Springbank

12yo's with the same label, produced some years apart: one is the colour of the Glenmorangie 10yo, and the other is the colour of a Mac 18 or darker. Because they're uncoloured you can make some reasonable guesses about the character of the two whiskies without even opening the bottles.

And an interesting side note for the conspiracy theorists... When I look at the headers for a posting of "The List" I see no "X-No-Archive: Yes" header. (Unless I'm doing something wrong...) But old postings of "The List" do not appear in the archives at google. Perhaps someone is removing the posts from google... all part of the nefarious coloured whisky conspiracy... Or,... it's just so dang long compared to other posts here (even mine!) that google thinks it's a binary!
