US laws in carrying whisky

Hopefully somebody from the USA can help out here with my question. I have been asked by a bunch of US friends that gather together at Pamplona each year to host a whisky nosing and tasting night in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They are flying me over from Holland and I will spend a night in NYC and then fly down. It will take place either in December or March. Anyway, the question. I hoped to do my buying in at Park Ave Liquors in NYC and carry them down on the plane to Florida. Can anybody tell me if thats allowed at all and are there restrictions, or will I need to pay extra tax for taking 15 bottles from NYC to Florida? Or would I find a decent selection in Florida? Some of the folks know single malts reasonably well and others are just discovering. So I have decided after much debate, to do a "round of Malts". Not the Classic malts, but starting with the Lowlands and working up to Speyside, Northern Highlands, Orkney, and Cambpelltown and Islay. 15 bottles in all all different of course. So could I get a decent selection in Florida, or can I transport the bottles from NYC by plane with no hassle?

Peace,

Jock

You should not have any problems bringing them on-board, as long as they fit in your carry-on luggage and are not opened. What time's the party?!

According to American Airlines web site

Alcoholic beverages in retail packages may be checked as baggage or carried on board, but are limited to five liters per passenger providing that following conditions are met:

  • The receptacle (bottle, can, etc.) does not exceed 5 liters.
  • The alcohol does not exceed 70 percent by volume (140 proof).

Alcoholic beverages under 24 percent by volume (most beers and wines) are not restricted. Opened containers are only allowed if they are re-closed and packed properly. Customs regulations by country may limit the amount of alcohol you may be transport. Please check ahead of time to ensure that you are in compliance with these limits.

Park Avenue has a way better selection than any place in Florida. I think I've been to every liqour store between Miami and Orlando. You will never find a Rosebank anywhere in Florida, or any real selection of Islay's. The same with arcane speysides. Sure, here and there you might find one or two, but the only real choice is Park Avenue. Thier inventory is online. Call them though, don't order on line.

You can buy at Park Avenue and carry on the plane, no problem. I did that last month, but it was only a couple bottles. 15 bottles would be hard to carry on-you'd have to check them through and pack them appropriately.

Why not buy them, and have Park Avenue ship them to your destination so they are waiting for you on arrival. when I asked them if they could do that, they said no problem-just pay the shipping. I don't know how they arrange the shipping to Florida, but they said they do it . It would be worth it just to avaoid the headaches of dealing with baggage handlers.

I live in suburban Ft. Laud. and have flown into the airport here many times with numerous bottles as carry-on (not to mention delicatessen meats as carrion) and in checked baggage.

You'll have no legal problems, just make sure to pack carefully--in your case a broken bottle would qualify as an air tragedy.

And if you're concerned about carrying those 15 bottles from the airport call me and I'll help you lighten the load!

Having read all the responding emails, I'd suggest that either finding a place in FL may be one choice. There are such places, believe it or not - but expect to pay a lot of money for whisky here, they have some very high taxes. However, having it shipped down to FL from any number of liquor stores are probably your safest bet. First, you don't want a broken bottle on the plane. It would be an air tragedy, as someone said! Most of all you don't want to deal with some TSA agent (whether you're legal or not) that has a hair across his butt that morning, who may attempt to pull your baggage from you. It has happened to me - just once.

I don't know about Park Ave Liquors (I'll be going to visit them in a couple of weeks when I'm in NYC) but there are several that I know that have a fantastic selection and will ship AND will guarantee the shipment by replacing the breakage!

Yes thanks. I already know Park Ave, because I dealt with them when I presented some whiskies in NYC last October. Thats the way I will go now that I know how difficult the logistics will be of doing it myself.

Thanks for the offer. Thanks to all who have answered my question here. Just to let you know what this is all about. I know some people who are either decendants and even a few who actually knew Ernest Hemmingway. Some of these guys fathers knew Hemmingway and hang out with him in Pamplona in Spain during the bull runs. Anyway they all tend to meet up every couple of months and party and tell stories of the great Fiesta in Pamplona each year and remenisce of times with Hemmingway and tell stories about bulls and such like. They meet up in New York, Cleveland, California and Fort Lauderdale depending on all of their busy schedules. Some of them are writers and others are sons of writers that lived in Europe during Hemmigway's times and others again have just found that group and go to Pamplona every year. Anyway, they have honored me with the presentation of 15 Single Malt Scotches at the Fort Lauderdale party. They have not decided yet if they will do that one in December this year, or March next year. But I should be hearing soon. So that sums it up. Thats why I am going and I hope it will be March. I would like a Florida spring.

Peace,

Jock

Well, then, I'll toast Rabbi at home. My Scot-brit buddy is sendin' me some Haggis, which we'll have wi bashed neeps and tatties. No live piper, but I'll have a lively CD!

Slainte, Jock. Enjoy yer Party and keep us informed.

Rabby's birthday is in January 25th. So it wont be in the time I am over. Haggis can be made by yourself, which is much better than the tinned stuff. If you have a decent butcher near you that can deliver the lights of a sheep and suet and you can find rolled oats, you are "in the game". I made some for my band members last Jauary and we had a Ceilidh right here at the house and all did renditions of Burns poems.

Peace,

Jock

Jock, I have the recipe, but findin' sheep lights, let alone heart or a stomach bag here in Los Angeles, California, is beyond the realm or reality. I did have the 'real deal' with the London Hibs last year, so I can appreciate the difference. I wish I could afford to go to Edinborough this cummin' year, but, alas, 'tis not to be.

Thanks for carin' about this old man. Yer a kind lad.

Over here in The Netherlands its also beyond the realm of reality until I figured out that Islamic butchers all slaughter sheep. So I went to a Turkish butcher which is especially for Turkish guest workers and told the butcher what I wanted. He looked at me as if I was daft. But made it all up for me as I required anyway. He only charged me a couple of Euro's because he would have thrown it all away anyway he told me. He even minced it for me. I guess LA would have Islamic butchers in it and I suggest you go there. Now maybe the guy will think your from the FBI and just checking him out in case he is a terrorist, but at least you will get your heart, liver and lungs and a stomach bag

Peace,

Jock

Thanks, Jocko. I hadn't thought of that. There are a couple of mosques here in the San Fernando Valley. I guess I'll hafta gird my loins and go enquire as to Islamic butchers. In fact, I just found a mosque about 1 km from here! What are you getting me into? ;-)

I can assure you that even though a minority of these guys have been doing terrible things, its equally true that they are a very hospitable people. The majority of them are very hospitable and glad to please. So if you ask an Islamic butcher to make up the ingredients of haggis for you I am sure he will be happy to do so. Suet is another matter and for that you would need to go to a regular butcher. The finished product when you make it yourself is much, much better than anything out of a tin. But I know how you feel about being unable to find ingredients for products you need. I need to have friends fron New Orleans send me Gumbo mix and Bayou hot Cajun seasoning. My favourite is called, " Slap Ya Mama". I also have to get the same friends to send me long grain rice from the Bayou. We canty get that lovely soft texture long grain rice over here. And for want of Crawfish I need to make do with shrimp.

Peace,

Jock
