Alright, I tried it. I like it. It's a pretty nice scotch to just have around for a regular everyday dram. White horse is officially my favorite blended scotch until I try some others. Well okay second to Johnny Walker Blue (which I can't really afford). Comments, suggestions for the next blend to try?

If you like blends, try JW Black. White Horse used to be my favorite scotch, before I discovered single malt. Famous Grouse is also OK.

Here's a good post by Bart, a regular here who's one of our more eloquent posters, on the subject of good blends in general and White Horse in particular:

And here's the whole thread:

And one more from a couple of years ago by the distinguished Bushido, who, alas, only drops by once in a long while these days:

Some very good material in these posts that's right on topic.

cheers.

Excellent info! Thanks for directing me to it. Generally I consume Single Malts, Single barell or small batch bourbons, etc. Finding a sturdy daily sipping whiskey is the basis for my question. SWMBO won't allow me to spend the money I'd like to spend :-)

Email: Actually my feet are big not medium.

If you want a daily sipping whiskey, you should stick to bourbon. There are some fantastic "daily sipping whiskeys" in the bourbon world.

Kevin,

If what you are looking for is something similar to White Horse, try Teacher's. It's available from popswine.com for a ridiculously low price, and can be had for fairly low prices in most regions. Next to Famous 'Gross,' it's miles ahead,IMHO. Once I stop blowing large money on singles and cognacs, I plan to purchase a bottle of WH, to compare to Teachers.

Others have suggested JW Black. My comment on that is this: It's pretty decent, but is it really worth $30, or might you spend another $8 and make Highland Park 12 your daily dram? All of you can thank me later, if you don't become alcoholics. As for JW blue, it's good, but I can't think of one single malt in the same price range (I even have a "bargain" duty-free bottle that I purchased for $100) that doesn't beat the tar out of this weak blend.

Somebody mentioned bourbon. I have a couple of (acceptable quality) bourbons, but I find them unsuitable to sip out of expensive stemware or ponder, in the same manner as Scotch. Plus, they are very different drinks. I'm by no means an expert taster or wanna-be, but my perspective is that bourbon is not about nose--great for drinking in larger sips and amounts, or even the occasional *gulp* shot (cartoon noise, and pun intended). I'm not really into getting bombed, so the Russel's Reserve that I indeed like tends to sit. To that end, so do my, er, daily drams. Oh well.

If you try some others, tell us what you think.

Bourbon is indeed a different drink from scotch on several levels. Still Bookers reserve or an Elijah Craig 18 are two of my favorite whiskies. It all depends on taste I guess.

I plan to get some Teachers Highland Cream this weekend to give it a run, thanks again all.
