2004 Harvest Reports?

Well, now the grapes for all but the icewines and vin de pailles should be merrily fermenting. For those of us who don't subscribe to wine industry trade publications, comprehensive news of the harvest conditions in various parts of the world is not so easily found. It occurs to me, though, that with the diversity of contributors present in this group, there should be a fair amount of information about the harvest reports in various parts of the USA, France, Germany, Austria and Italy (sorry, Antipodeans! I didn't think about this in May). So, anyone care to share news of the harvest in their corner of the world? What should I be squirreling away my wine money for?

Bandol looks perfect, a year like 2001. No rain from may to september, but relatively cool conditions throughout summer.

Rust reports to me that due to bad weather in october harvest barely started on November 10 and proceded very slowly, ended December 2 with

2 degree weather. Good Ausbruch expected.

Best

in Burgenland, Austria (for those who don't know where this lovely little town is to be sought)

Caution: This holds true for botrytis wines (Ausbruch, TBA) only. All dry whites and the major part of the reds were safely brought in before the bad weather.

Easy harvesting in Chianti wine-area in those areas not touched by hailstorms.

Central areas (Greve, Gaiole...) and the province of Pistoia had a bit too much rain during summer with a consequent overproduction. Southern part (Berardenga, Chianciano etc.) and the province of Pisa had nice and healthy grapes.

No news about east part of Chianti wine area (Arezzo..)

Personally I started harvesting the third week of september (15 days in late respect to 2003) and finished the third of october.

Here in Sonoma County California we had a good year. I would rate it at slightly above, to above average in fruit quality. The powdery mildew, botrytis and pest pressure was lower than normal. A warmer than normal spring, decent fruit set at bloom and a cool summer resulted in a harvest that was typically 2 weeks early. However the fruit hang time was normal. The yield was usually slightly below normal which made both the winemakers and marketing people happy. My winemaker wife rated the year as above average to excellent.

Walla Walla AVA, Washington USA: Very little was harvested from local vineyards this year because of the severe winter. However, winemakers were able to find alternate sources -- much of the wine made here is from fruit sourced elsewhere anyway -- and the ones I know have been very pleased with the quality.

Hi All- This just in from one of our Wachau region vintners: "The year looked really grim until in the last weeks of harvest, when it finally got dry again and the gradiations went up to 20,5 KMW. This year's Smaragds have a 15-20% botrytis resulting in very smooth and full wines. Overall the wines are very elegant, fruity with a lot of spice and it seems like that's true for all Wachauer wines. A good year." e. _______

Thanks to all for your most informative replies. It looks like I'll have to put away lots of $$$ for the 2004s ;-)
