German Wine in Magnum (the intended message; ignore duplicate)

Oops, I accidentally sent out a copy of my message before it was finished... clearly you can see my thoughts are elsewhere. :)

So, For the last five days I have been completely fixated on a bottle of German Riesling in Magnum format. The wine is a Donhoff 2003 Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese for $109 and is only the second German wine that I have ever seen in a magnum format. This thing is crazy! It stands like three feet tall, is somewhat phallic and peers over every other wine in the store with presence and mystique not unlike that of the Eiffel Tower. My instinct is to buy one and just cherish the oddity of such a bottle; not to mention a great producer in a highly anticipated vintage. My only hold out is a severe concern for how to store one of these puppies. This is a wine that I would obviously want to bring out with much ado many years later when it is mature. The thought of even bringing a bottle like that out of the store, onto the NYC subway and past my girlfriend eyes is daunting enough, but what to do with such a monster for a decade? There is now way that one of these things would fit into my already bulging cellar unit. Does anybody have any experience or stories about 1.5L German bottles? Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks! Jason

Sorry, I responded to your other thread which was above this one. For long storage, your wine will indeed need cooler storage than room temperature in most modern homes. You mention that your refrigerated wine storage unit is full and that the big bottle would not fit. The only solutions seem tobe finding a friend with extra cellar space who will store the bottle for you or to rent commercial storage space. Someone at the wine shop likely will know about wine storage firms in your area. Renting space would not be practical for just one bottle, but since your home storage unit is full the most practical short-term solution might be to rent a little storage space for your special bottle and other bottles you buy that need some age. The wine bug seems to have bitten you, so sooner are later you likely are going to have to increase your storage space.
