A red grape called plavac mali

I saw this in a recent article:

"Vineyards on the Croatian island of Hvar produce primarily white wine. But the area is also known for a red grape called plavac mali, or mali plavac. Many believe this is the original zinfandel."

Any thoughts on plavac mali?

Henry, the story of the origins of Zinfandel has been shifting over the years as new evidence comes in. According to the best authority on this subject, Dr. Carole Meredith at UC Davis, it's the other way around: Zinfandel is actually one of the parents of plavac mali.
