Austrian wine advice?

I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow, but am hoping to make it to a tasting of German and Austrian wines today. The store has high prices, but usually has a sale in conjunction with tastings. I have no idea what I'll taste, but the list below is a selection of their Austrian wines (at regular retail) from producers I've likes. I was hoping that Michael Pronay or the other Austrian gentleman (Robert R?) might by chance see this and tell me if they have any favorites (so if there's a sale, I can more confidently buy ones that aren't in tasting). Thanks.

Gruner Veltliner Alte Reben Brundylmeyer 2001 $35

Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Rotes Tor Hirtzberger 2001 $28 Gruner Veltliner Freiheit Nigl 2002 $16

2000 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Kreutles Knoll ($36,this one I already own, think I paid more like $28))

I like anything that Kracher makes. It's sweet wine, but even people who do not like sweet wine usually appreciate Kracher's wines.

Hi Dale!

I am by no means an expert but I would expect that all of this wines are really good, all are from well respected producers.

thanks Michael and Robert. I ended up with more of the Knoll GV Smargrad , plus a few others.

After my vacation I came back to a Austrian wine. I slowly dragged myself home after work Monday, jetlagged and waterlogged back in soggy NY. Betsy had made a chicken salad that apparently came from Danny Kaye via Jacques Pepin (?!). She had upped the hot sauce in the recipe, which also had loads of fresh tarragon. Luckily, the previous week before I left I had thrown a bottle of white in fridge, the 2001 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen. The pepper notes in the wine complemented the pepper in the chicken salad. Well-balanced, nice touch of spice, good food wine. Hard to beat for price ($10ish). B/B+ on my easy scale

As to the Zachy's tasting of Austrian and German Rieslings, too much time has passed for accurate notes, but this is what I can decipher from sheets:

Austria

2002 Domane Wachau Riesling Federspiel Terrassen (11.99) Good QPR. Crisp, bright fruit. I buy.

2000 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Terrassen (34.99) Very good, nice body.

2000 FX Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg ($60) Floral, mouthfilling. Wet rocks, apples. Very impressive

2001 Prager Riesling Federspiel Steinriegl (28.99) softer than others, mineral

2002 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Gobelsburger (9.99) Crisp, light. More an apertif wine than a dinner one, but nice

2001 Hiedler Riesling Loiser Berg (19.99) On the soft side, a (pleasant) petrol note I don't associate with Austria I get one just to retry.

2002 Hirsch Riesling Gaisberg April(29.99) Very good, sweet citrus flavors (though dry wine)

Germany

2001 Strub Niersteiner Orbel Riesling Kabinett (9.99) Peachy, good

2002 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett (15.99) So-so, soft

2002 J. J. Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett (18.99) A definite winner. Fantastic balance of acidity and sugar, spices and tropical fruit. This one I buy

2002 Hoffman-Simon Piesporter Goldtropchen Riesling Kabinett (12.99) Quite sweet for a Kabinett. OK

2002 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett (15.99) Can't read note, but know I liked. But I liked the 2001 more (and paid more like $12)

2002 Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spatlese Trocken (34.99) Mineral, orange, Very good.

2002 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett (18.99) Good structure, acidity

2001 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Riesling Qba (15.99) Good. Sugar and rocks

2001 JJ Prum Riesling Kabinett (14.99) Dieseling riesling, well-balanced, slate and apple. I buy

2002 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett (16.99) Good, no more

2002 Graff Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese (11.99) Pleasant, cheap for Spatlese, but doesn't hold the interest of most of the other wines

1997 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (39.99) Sulphur, nicely balanced, flavors of blood oranges (in Riesling?!?!) and apples
