When the cork popped, however, we were quite pleasantly surprised. This wine is Gaja's blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Merlot, presumably made with a view to earlier drinking. I had temporarily (i.e. for a few years or so) misplaced a half case of this in the cellar. This is surprisingly easy to do - if it is in a bin that is partially blocked with cases stacked in front, and if I forgot to use a neck tag, I could go on ignoring something for years.
It showed a cherry based nose, soft tannins and surprising length. I must excavate the rest and bring it on-line for drinking soon, although the wine doesn't seem to be falling apart at all - which for a dubious vintage and a wine intended for early consumption is saying something.
Last couple of times I 'lost' something worked out pretty well too - an early
80s Roxborough Chard and a 79 Fetzer Zin both showed unexpected class when opened.
