Backyard Vineyard developing

I posted a while ago regarding the opportunity I was given in association with a viticulturist student friend starting up a small vineyard in the back corner of my Yarra Valley property. As a few folks were interested, thought I'd update on progress.

The front row (2.y.o grafts) have taken off sensationally. Half the row unfortunately has the growth from the Schwarkopf (sp?) root stock predominant instead of the grafted merlot. I am told we are to leave the rootstock develop, and next season we will graft again. (I want some Pinot!!).

The other 4 rows are predominantly 1st year Shiraz cuttings, and a sensational result. Of 60 vines planted, 57 have come through. His teacher is astounded at that hit rate. :>)

I did tell you I was also given a cutting from Heritage listed Shiraz vines (oldest in Australia I am told), as a token of appreciation. "Stick" as he is affectionately known, unfortunately has not bothered to shoot, but I am assured he is going to 'sleep' this season and kick off next year.

In amongst the mix are a few experimental vines, including a few Pinot Gris vines. Now, I LOVE cote rotie style shiraz viognier blends, but what would a small % of Pinot Gris do to a shiraz? Any clues or am I showing my naievity?

You probably mean "Schwarzmann". It's used a lot over here in the Swan Valley. "Schwarzkopf" makes a great hair-gel... ;)
