Bottles for wine

not sure if this is the correct group for technical questions about wine making, storing and corking.

if not please advise the group to post. thanks

would it be possible to bottle wine in dr. pepper or soda pop bottles. does the bottle shape or size matter when bottling wine?

the reason, access to a vast amount of pop bottles, and it is the right amount for a glass or two, and not to have any left over.

There is a group rec.crafts.winemaking . If you have trouble finding it, just go to Google, select Groups, and enter the word wine in a search of the groups.

I see no problem in using clean glass bottles of just about any type that are used for drinks or food. Some may not seal well with corks. However if they seal with a standard bottle cap, that will be fine if you do not keep the wine for very many years. A device to apply the caps and caps are inexpensive and can be found in hobby wine stores, among other places. Also some kitchen equipment stores carry them, since some cap bottles of sauces etc. A pop bottle is of no more unusual shape than some wine bottles I have seen.

do not use plastic bottles, as there is gas exchange through the plastic plus it will produce off-flavors.

screw-cap glass bottles are fine except you will need a special capping device, which i think it more costly than the non-screw caps.

both the screw and non-screw caps and capping devices are available at numerous online and brick & mortar brewing suppliers.

be sure to select the correct type of cap, iirc there are several types of seals in the caps, some more suitable for longer term storage.

just for the record, i had bottled some slightly sparkling meads under non-screw cap for about a year, no oxidation or any other problems.
