Broken Port glasses - any ideas on replacement?

Hi all,

I've got a set of Villeroy & Boch Port stems (started out with 30), but I'm now down to 22. These particular glasses were discontinued by V & B in the late 80s, early 90s. I bought all that were available from V & B at that time. They are plain, and very similar to the Riedel Vinum Port stem, except that the base is a bit more rounded, than is the Riedel, which tapers, a la a Champagne flute - sort of.

Now that I'm below 24 (a disasterous dinner cost me two!), I have been looking for them at the usual sources, Replacements, Ltd, etc. and have spent hours on Google.

Does anybody have a possible source for discontinued V & B stemware? About all that I can find are ornate, cut-glass pieces. Unfortunately, I do not have a model/style #, or name.

Any ideas?

TIA Hunt

Have you tried eBay? I've been able to find a lot of stuff that I couldn't find anywhere else, and normally for less than I expected to pay. They also now have a "Want It" feature, where you can list what you are looking for.... that hasn't yet proven successful for me, but it's fairly new and I expect it will eventually.

Good luck, Gary

No, I had not, but will upon return from UK. Thanks for the tip. I guess I need to now include a search on E-bay, right after I do a Google for about everything.

I have bought many old wine glasses through eBay. The first thing you must do is design a custom search at eBay so that you do not have to spend so much time searching every time. Then you must check every few days. I mainly was checking for old Moser, and it sometimes took a year to find what I wanted. You will soon notice a few larger store owners that post in eBay often with the general type of items you are seeking. It often is worth contacting them to see if they have what you want or see if they will notify you if they can find it.

For a custom search for Moser, I of course included the brand name. However, Moser made many things. I required glass, goblet, or stem to be present to cut out most of other Moser products. It sometimes helps to exclude some things from a search - for example exclude chandelier if you are searching for Italian wine glasses from the Venice area. If possible, place your bid at the very last moment so no one else will have time to outbid you. After having my clock set to within one second of the eBay clock, I have everything ready to bid except clicking the final button within one minute of the deadline. Then I click about 15 seconds before the deadline. Some people with the best DSL connections wait until about 3 to 5 secods before the final deadline.

Hi Cwdjrx_, If I may, I'd also like to mention searching for misspelled words on e-bay. "Mosur" and other spellings might bring interesting results. I mention this because my wife is a cookbook collector, and she often finds treasures because the subject is misspelled. Oops, I just gave away a secret. :-)

Thank you for the tips. I think that the very first thing that I need to do is have the exact glass identified. I'll check with V & B with some images and measurements, as well as Replacements, Ltd, which does list a ton of V & B glasses. It seems that the glass was not listed as a Port glass (copita) exactly, when I acquired my set. I also doubt that I still have any of the boxes after all these years.

If all proves fruitless, maybe I'll just sell 22 on E-bay and get Riedels to replace them, or just put them into storage until the next Port-tasting.

Again, thanks for the input - I think I know where I'll be hanging out soon.
