Chateau Hallet Sauternes

Are these inexpensive wines worth even trying? It looks like they are less than $15.

I flipped by a local cooking show in Harrisonburg, VA and saw them tasting a Chateau Hallet and praising it.

Just wondering.

For the price it's OK. It doesn't have much depth or complexity and it's a little light on the palate but it's really not too bad with a little fruit and cheese after dinner.

I can't offer an informed opinion about this wine, as I haven't tried it (or heard of it!). Is the under$15 for a 375? Because one seldom sees Sauternes under $15 for 750 except for maybe something like Barton & Guestier negoce bottlings (and I gotta say really cheap Sauternes like B&G is almost uniformly awful). But at $12-15 per half one can generally find some dependable Barsac/Sauternes like Doisy Daene, Bastor Lam-whatever, etc (and maybe Myrat, Doisy Vedrines, Filhot, etc- maybe those are more like $15-20 per half). If the Hallet is praised and in your area, I can't see a big downside to trying one bottle. If you don't like it, use it for cooking. Pears poached in Sauternes is a classic, and people do other fruits, too. Or you can use as a different twist on a glaze. If you try it, please report back. Thanks/
