Australian Wine Mags.

Hello,

As I explained to the thread that I started that is hugely popular at 0 replies, I bought a copy of Gourmet Traveller Wine [Australasian Edition] and really liked it.

Being in Australia I obviously enjoy a lot of Australian wines as they're cheaper and easier to get, but I also enjoy imports from time to time, and enjoy reading about them. I am actually looking at foreign wines just out of interest.

So I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the various Australian or Australian centred wine publications?

I'd get subscriptions if they were worth it.

So I'll outline what my wine profile is as a reference.

I enjoy tasting notes, and head to head type stuff, my tastes are mostly red [and mostly big reds] but I enjoy subtle reds, roses, whites, fortifieds, stickies, bubblies, anything really, as well. I am mostly Australian-centric, but have no problem drinking imports.

I wouldn't call myself an absolute beginner, but I'm certainly fairly early in my development. I don't want advanced technical discussion running at 20+ pages of the merits of 14% versus 15% alcohol volume etc. But some hints and tips would be nice. I don't need to know very basic stuff.

I typically buy wine in the $0-$15 range without a problem just to try, even just if it looks good or is a variety I've never had. $15-$20 if its recommended. And anything over that I'd buy if I'd looked into it and was hunting it down.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mat Whilst Gourmet Traveller Wine isn't a bad read I like Winestate the best.(

) Articles tend to assume a respectable amount of knowledge where the GTW is happily aimed at beginners. WS also has heaps and heaps of tasting notes (1000 or so per issue) and a nice simple 5 star system. Winefront Monthly

) is also a cracker of a read with Campbell Mattinson writing some of the best wine articles I've ever read. Also stacks of reviews. A good start there I reckon. Cheers Andrew

Yeah I bought the latest edition of Winestate. Its good, I probably like Gourmet Traveller Wine more though mostly because of the layout and the structure.

I'm not a huge fan of the 5 star system, but Gourmet Wine seems to have more 5 star entries. Winestate doesn't seem to have cellaring potential advice on most of their notes. I also find Winestates notes a little spartan on each wine.

Visually Gourmet Wine is more accessable straight away, more appealing. But Winestate is too an excellent mag, despite my quibbles.

I haven't really started reading the articles yet though, so I can't really comment on what level they are at.

I also bought Australian Wine Selector. I'm not a big fan of this at all. It looks a bit low budget, especially compared to the others. There is also the fact it is almost totally devoid of tasting notes and instead filled with fluff pieces and general interest stories.

There is another magazine that covers both food and wine. It is a NZ magazine called Cuisine. This deals primarily with NZ, but does contain tasting notes and review of Australian wines. I think the recipes and food articles are wonderful.
