Chateau Musar Wines

First St. Helier we should have a rule here that you cannot post while obviously wasted with booze. But for the record I would assume that most men would prefer golf to wine here in USA. Where I live there are probably more men golfing daily than bottles of wine opened weekly.

Therefore your assumptions are wrong. Americans love Golf and have for years, and long before Tiger Woods who is a man, not a boy!

His lordship evidentally forgot, an forgive me m'lord for impugning you so, to add a smiley. I have taken the liberty of adding it here :-)

(and just for a cultural analogy calling Saint Andrews a golf course is like saying that the White House, is a large residence in the US. While technically true it just doesn't quite convey the respect due the place.)

As I have a Scot for my Grandfather, I have the right to call it what I want, so there!!!! Isn't the White House, just a large residence when Mr. Bush currently lives:-)

Oh you are such a sensitive wee laddie, Dickie !!!!!

And yes, Joe is correct - sorry about the lack of smiley !!!!!

(And I will let you know when I am back imbibing, Richard - just so you may spot when one is writing with tongue in cheek !!!!!)

And for the record, I too love a round of golf - I am a *very* average player - nicknamed "half-way Harry" for obvious reasons.

And I too prefer golf to wine - but only before noon!!!!!

Dick, I watch the Masters (via satellite) every year and admire the trees and azaleas - and sometimes even the golf.

And, no, I shall never walk the fairways of Augusta (or Pine Valley or Cypress Point) - nor do I have any wish to do so.

But St Andrews (Old Course) is something else - this is truly the oldest course on the world. It is said that golf (or something vaguely similar) was played here in the 12th century.

The Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole is thought to have been built by the Romans.

Did I enjoy my day? Honestly, no - it was a somewhat shitty day, and my play was pathetic.

But I will never forget the feeling (of terror!) standing on the first tee, or the delight at parring the 18th (my one and only par on the day) - nor the hole in my wallet!!!!!

As I said, you don't visit St Andrews - you make a pilgrimage.

But you can, and should, walk the fairways at Pebble Beach, which is still open to the public, albeit the wealthy public. Along with Augusta National -- which I still shall probably never play, although not for lack of desire -- it's IMO one of the two iconic US courses.

Yes, there is the history, but also the tremendous gulf that exists between US "target" golf and links-style golf. Most Americans find the hardpan quality of the fairways and wind to be too much for their delicate sensibilities.

Exactly how I felt at Pebble Beach, too, especially after yanking one into the surf at No. 18. However, I cherish the memory of my round there, as I'm sure you do of yours at the Old Course, and I'm glad that I did it in an era when impoverished college students could still think of playing there ;-)

Humph! A good walk spoiled! The irony is that I am suffering from a bad case of golfer's elbow (from shovelling snow). That's the arm I use for lifting my wine glass - damned inconvenient;-) Graham

Graham, I am suffering from tennis elbow, same thing, I think. I have had 2 injections of corto-steroids and it is now about 90% better. Are you the same Graham who lives in Canada? In the UK there is a clasp device to put on the tendon which will allow you tol do most things. If you are the said Graham, if you would like me to get a clasp here for you and forward it on, please let me know.

Sorry for being Off topic but it is a little on topic as raising a glass can bring discomfort!!!

Actually, it's on the other side of the elbow (tennis on the outside, golfer's on the inside)

The Dr. will only do that as a last resort as I understand that the "cure" is worse than the complaint.

Yes - originally from Suffolk and a denizen of ukfdm.

Many thanks but I have one.

Not only that but if I take the anti-inflammatories, I can't drink wine:-(( Cheers Graham

I take anti-inflammatory tablets and it hasn't stopped me drinking wine!!!

The injections into my elbow were not as bad as alleged to me by a friend and the relief after 3 days was well worth the little bit of discomfort.

I hope your elbow recovers.

St. helier, I am not that far from August, Ga. I think its about 2.5 hours from where I live in NC.

Sadly, I am not a golfer, of much of one. But years ago I attended the practice rounds, 3 days in advance and had a GREAT time there. Met and talked to many of the players and they had time and inclination to socialize. Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and many others were really nice. It was a memorable day.

My company was a sponsor of the event and had tickets and we had membership to golf there with clients. Since I did not really golf others that would really appreciated it stepped in for me.

My best memory was when we were all lined up and J. Nicklaus hit the ball it nailed a guy in the chest and he was rushed to the hospital. The person hit was to his left on the opposite side I was on. And I thought I was the only one that hit that bad. :-)

Glad you watch. I don't get to Europe much and have not been in years. We are looking at Tuscany for late September and olive harvest in October there.

Thanks! I hope so too as I have so much landscaping and reno work to do. I also want to do some long cycle rides but cycling seems to exacerbate the problem:-( Graham
