Costco's latest

Ten days ago I was literally in Alexander Valley, hitting favorite spots like Hanna Winery and Locals, a co-op tasting room in downtown Geyserville (if you can call it a "downtown", heh). I dropped some serious bucks there, needless to say.

Yesterday I'm cruising the 4th Ave S. Costco in Seattle, and what do I see? A Kirkland brand 2005 Alexander Valley Cab for $17 -- with Nick Goldschmidt's name on it! In the display box right next to it is Goldschmidt's own '02 cab for $33. Also prominently displayed: a Kirkland 2005 Columbia Valley Syrah, "cellared and bottled by DC Flynt M.W. ... Bob Betz M.W. consulting winemaker"! $16. That would be the same Bob Betz who was just named Winemaker of the Year by Sunset. Holy grape crush, Batman. I took home a bottle of each, but have yet to open them.

I remember the days (just months ago) when no winemaker wanted to be publicly associated with the Costco Kirkland wine label. Now, according to Sarah, the Costco wine steward, they all want credit for the wines they're producing.

The supply of Kirkland Alex cab was pretty limited...maybe eight cases in the stack. Not much more for the syrah. Anybody want the sku numbers?

I saw exactly the same products a couple of days ago, as I always want to try and generally do try Kirkland's wines.

However, I passed on the Geyersville, Alexander Valley Cab, even though we did think the Kirkland Oakville cabernet was good enough to buy again ($17.99). When you do try them, let me know -- maybe they'll still be left.

costco probably pays them to put their name on the label.

would be a nice blind tasting to do the real thing against the kirkland.

for an example with which I am familiar, Greg La Follette makes some of the finest wines in the west(du nah among others). he also winemaker for a mass producer with under $10 wines, and a very fine OFS.

so, just because the mondavi name is on the bottle, it could be $10, or it could be $100.

label drinkers of the world, unite!

Repeating my reply to you and adding more below:

I was in Costco today and couldn't resist against my own judgment to buy the Geyersville cab. We were a little late getting home -- but we opened it and had a glass with late dinner -- NOT BAD!
