2000 Silver Oak Alexander Valley

x-no archive: yes

Any comments on the 2000 Silver Oak Alexander Valley? My wine shop is doing a $54.00/bottle pre-order and the price seems better than usual and better than any online price I can find. I usually like the Silver Oak Cabs. The only TN I can find online come from Silver Oak. I saw Parker's comments but no score. Anyone here try this wine? Thanks in advance.

Well, to start with, what WERE Parker's comments? Every once in a while his words hint at what he actually thinks of the wine, y'know.

I realize this, however, I'm trying to compare this vintage to other Silver Oak wines. Here's what Parker said: "The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a medium-bodied, soft, attractive effort with plenty of herbaceousness along with notes of figs, plums, and red currants. Made in an up-front style, it begs to be drunk over the next 7-8 years."

I'm hoping to get more opinions on this one and an answer to the question "Is it worth $54?"

Parker's comments could describe many Cal Cabs in lower price tiers, so I want to know if I should spend my money elsewhere or here. Thanks.

That wine consistently sells between $70 and $100 in its first year of release. When I see it for less than $70, I usually buy it. Now that Justine Meyer has died and his partner wants to take the winery in a different direction, you might buy it and savor it 10 years from now when Silver Oak is only a memory of a fine winery.

Two questions I'd really appreciate some info on:

  1. In what direction is Ray Duncan (I presume that's who you're talking about) taking Silver Oak?

  1. Is there an accessible web site that provides 'insider' info on such things?

Thanks.

Bill, I don't think so- the 1998, 1999, and 2000 are widely available for mid-$50s. $70-100 sound smore like the Napa.

Duncan was developing Merlot back in 98. I was at the winery in 2002 and I had the impression that Meyer was not sold on the idea at all. My view was that Duncan wanted to make a blend. Now he has started a second label I think and is going to do the blend, Merlot and other grapes under that label.

Perhaps the Wine Spectator news section is the best source of what is happening in the business. There are publications for the professionals but I don't get that involved. B

I think I'd read that Duncan had bought the Stonegate property and re-named it Twomey Cellars to produce Merlot. Why would a move like that necessarily spell the decline of Silver Oak?

Big question, though...... will Twomey offer Krispy Kreme donuts on release day?
