Disappointed Penfolds 407

Has anyone tried the Penfolds BIN 407 before? This is the second time I tried this wine. The first time was excellent - very fruity, sweet, and smooth. Unfortunately, this time the wine is not sweet at all plus it is highly tannin!

I have noticed the cork was very dry, could this be the reason?

Please kindly advice.

Best regards,

My notes for the 2000: Opened chalky and tart, eventually unfolded into a nice wine with strong berry flavors and a hint of cassis.

Remember it as being a good wine in what is considered a bad yr in AU.

I think on balance I suspect that Michael P has hit the nail on the head. A slightly corked wine can easily just show up as being a bit (or a lot) below par, without the actual "corked" symptoms being that noticeable except to some poor unfortunates like Mark who are highly sensitive to it.

Our local national retailer will take back bottles of corked wine they've sold and replace them - no questions asked. Martin PS They don't accept empty bottles tho'!

Very much depends on legal structures in the country you're talking of. And all legal warranties are rather shortlived; the maximum I know of is within the EU, where there is a 24 month warranty on defects that have already existed on purchase date.

You should avoid buying wine from merchants who would refuse to refund your money. My preferred wine seller -- Austin Wine Merchant, Austin TX, USA for those interested -- keeps a computerized log of all purchases. If you open a bad wine, you should bring back the bottle with at least some of the original wine in it. Apparently, their distributors require this for a refund; they will not actually challenge you by examining it.
