Chateau des Estanilles

In terms of Faugères producers ofany significant quantity, Estanilles IS the top of the pack (outside of a couple of garages producers). Cannot remember exactly, but I think the top red is S+G+Carignan. Neighbouring vineyards are St Chinian - try the quiaintly named Clos Bagatelle which is a S+G+M+Carignan mix or some of the VdPs from the area north of Pezenas (e.g. Dom de l'Arjolle). Unfortunately this is not an area where you can go by the AOC name or even the geographiocal location. The difference between the top of the pack and the bottom is enormous.

I only know Estanilles by reputation- Alquier is only Faugeres I've really tried (I think Alquier a GSM blend). Most Languedocs have Cinsault &/or Carignan, so I wouldn't be surprised if one or both were present. Sorry can't help more, maybe Mike or someone more tuned into to Languedoc. Dale

OK, I had missed this thread. I had my first Estanilles this past WE, a riend brought a 1993. My first impression was unripe carignan, the ladies thought it was corked, others thought it was reduced. A truly puzzling tasting. I had always thought it was syrah mourvedre (this would tend to confirm the reduction thesis). Two hours of violent aeration did not seem to change the wine. Maybe it was just a dodgy bottle.
