French winemakers protest today

Just FYI, there was a biggish protest of french winemakers today, in Chalon-s-Soane. Saw a brief bit on the news, apparently there were 2,500 present, and they have won a visit with the PM.

At issue seems to be the inability to advertise alcoholic beverages.

Although, considering how the US campaign for Bordeaux has gone, perhaps it's not a bad thing. Woody Allen? :)

Most Amercians like Woody Allen less than they like the French. I think their research was off base!!!! :-)

Wait a minute! I happen to like Woody Allen's movies (but I will concede that his personal life is a bit dysfunctional). Come to think of it, I also like most of the French I've met. The one thing I just don't "get" is why the French are so obsessed with Jerry Lewis...

Just to keep this on topic: Can someone explain to me the fuss in Burgundy over this new wineries' association?

Actually Tom, I have been in France for 15 years and I have never seen Jerry Lewis on the tube and never heard anyone speak about him.

But I heard this myth about the French and JL before leaving North America, and really, I assure you that there is no basis in fact.

OTOH, the French seem to like all kinds of really LOUSY french comedians.

Apparently Mr. Lewis did get great reviews from French critics and was in fact very popular in France, amazing critics in the US. But it was a long time ago - 50's and 60's it sounds like, when Lewis was in his "prime". So there is a germ of truth to it but the story that the French are fascinated with Jerry Lewis is more than a bit dated - *were* fascinated would be more accurate.

Or their pop music... Johnny Halliday? It's as if I was missing the decoder ring... Perry Como with a strat. Ugh.

An ugly image, just like the real JH. I never understood Gainsbourg much either, but am too cowardly to admit it in local company. (I remember when he died, seeing a tribute on TV with maybe twenty 8 year olds, each with made-up stubble, a real (lit) cigarette and glass of whiskey. Innocence of childhood, go figure).

And thanks for not pointing out: Saone, not Soane.
