Looking for German wine

You would have to be much more precise for me to find out for sure. There are several somewhat similar names. Usually a German wine has two parts to the name. The first part often is named after a wine village and the second part is named after a specifc vineyard or a group of vineyards(grosslage). A few of the most famous vineyards such as Steinberger can use a single name, but the name you quote is not one of these. The names you quote could be close to a village name. Are you sure this is a vineyard name and not that of a wine grower? Also are you certain the wine is from Germay? Austria or Alsace might have a name somewhat like the ones you give.

If one assumes the names you give are a village name, there are a few names that are somewhat similar, but I have never heard of these wines. I found them listed in old and new reference books. You might find it difficult to find some of these, even in Germany, outside of their region.

Baden has a village named Ötlingen with the two vineyards Sonnhohle and Stiege. The Hessische Bergstrasse has Ottersweier with the vineyards Althof and Wolfhag. The Pfalz has Ottersheim with the vineyard Kahlenberg and Ottersheim/Zellerthal with the vineyard Bräunersberg. I could have missed some. Germany is full of vineyard names. On the label the village name usualy has an "er" added to the end meaning "from". such as Johannisberg becomes Johannisberger on the label.

Hi I don't see any vineyard of that name. There is, among other things, a village in Bavaria called Öttingen - but Bavaria is not a wine area... I'd guess you are giving a producers name... Let's have the full text from the label! Anders

Thanks to everyone for their comments.

Unfortunately, I don't know more information than the Ottinger winery. A distant relative told me that part of my family started the "zu Ottinger" winery in the 1400s, and "it is still running today." I'm curious to find out more, but to be honest that's all I know.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Googling in German I found the following: Weingut Detlev Ritter und Edler von Oettinger Rheinallee 1-3, 65346 Erbach Tel.: 06 12 3 - 62 64 8

Erbach is a village in the Rheingau - famous for the Marcobrunner vineyard among others, so the location is quite prime! (In fact, I see they offer a Marcobrunner wine)

Ah, well, my prime source list them as 'von Oetinger' and they have the following e-mail address snipped-for-privacy@t-online.de
