Do you take notes on the music as you listen to it? Do you listen to just a short bit of it, then rinse out your ear?
LOL! (Actually, for some of it, I wish I could.) And yes, I do pay attention to the various aspects of the music I listen to.
Jose
In what sense? We all are capable of hearing the parts individually, but we LISTEN to the whole.
Well, I listen to the parts, I listen to the whole, I listen to how they relate to each other. Sometimes I'll listen to an individual instrument, riff, or harmonic progression. Sometimes I'll concentrate more on the melody, sometimes the descant.
Sometimes I'll sit down and pay sharp attention to just why a certain piece grabs me. I'm sometimes surprised.

Sometimes, yes. For a closer parallel to wine tasting, I also join groups of others who play / appreciate and critique perforamnces, share knowledge, etc. How do you improve your critical understanding of wine - music - art? Don;t bother answering - I already know; you don't.
Nope. I tooled over to their web site, but couldn't easily find links to actually listen to samples. Maybe the local library has a CD.

I doubt I would want to be!
Why do I go to wine tastings? To sample expensive product before I lay out good money for it & to learn about wine styles and producers so that next time I'm buying I have a better idea of what is likely to give me value for money.
Do you buy a car blind or test drive and study the specs first?

Good stuff, Mike.
Note there are 10 more to go!

But 'tasting' doesn't tell you how a wine performs in the context for which wine is intended to be used: with food.
No sequitur
Michael, if I want to use a wine to give the cat a bath, I am free to do so. I tend to also like the food related aspects of wine appreciation, but I do not see why I should sneer at those who want to gargle with it, use it to polish silver or unplug the drains.
In "tasting", the wine doesn't perform the way it would in the context in which it is intended (with food). However, it does perform, and one who has done both "tasting" and "drinking" with the same wines can learn how to translate.
This is useful.

My point.
Perhaps. But why bother? What a collosal waste of time!
I'm sat here at the moment, listening to internet commentary on my soccer team's game with a nice glass of red to keep me company. [We've just won
3-0, btw, & are second in the league!!)I chose it (a cheapish Aussie shiraz) because I knew it from a tasting at the wine warehouse I bought it from, as a fruity, soft tannin, easy going glugger that does not need food with it to be enjoyed. I've got other wines in the "cellar" that would not be enjoyable without food to soften them or whose attributes are enhanced by food and thus wasted without.
My prior tasting of the wine I have before me illustrates the benefit of tasting and, I'm sorry to say, the narrowness of your view: Wine is NOT only intended to be used with food AND Tasting has a very real value if one buys and drinks a range of wines different in style & price.

Why would you drink something like that? Is there something wrong with you? Doesn't your retailer carry Italian wines?
REAL wines are made to have with food.
Ah, I'm sorry, I did not realise you had such a narrow, bigoted view. If I had I would not have wasted my time posting and others in reading my post to you.
pk
Bigoted? How so? I have partaken of many wines. The ones I like are ALWAYS Italian. Always.
As I said - because it's useful. It helps me make decisions on which wine to buy, which wine to buy lots of, and which wine to forego at the store or the winery. It also helps me pick a wine to go with a meal when I'm not cooking I-- foods. :)
Drinking wine and living are also wastes of time. No?
