Italian Dessert wine: Maculan Torcolato 2003

Mar 29, 2007 0 Replies

While in Las Vegas attended a nice dinner at Picasso. The ambiance was great as we sat outside overlooking the Bellagio Fountains.

We had several great wines paired with the dinner. The 3rd course was a Seared Foie Gras with Poached Lady Apple and Apple Cider Vinegar. This was Paired with the 2003 Maculan Torcolato.

Never having had this type of wine from Italy all I can say is move over Y'quem. This wine was incredibly complex. Very Yellow in color, layers of Peach, appricot, honey, strong acid, crisp...just incredible.

Couple other standouts:

1) Egon Muller, Scharzhofberger, Riesling Kabinett, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. This was with 1st course Maine Lobster Salad wtih Apple Champagne vinagrette.

2) 1989 Prince Poniatowski, Clos De L'Avenir, Vouvray, Moelleux, Loire Valley France. This was with Pan Seared U-10 Day Boat Scallops with jus de veau over potatoesa mousseline.

This wine was a huge standout. I have not had lots of experience with aged Chenin Blanc but the wine showed less of the sweetness after the bottle aging and was GREAT. I cannot find any on internet to buy :-(

That is all folks. There were 3 other courses but these were the stars.
