Jackpot or Vinegar

Hi, I have a four bottle collection of 3 1978 & 1 1979 Antinori Wines. They came in a wood box with a picture of the "Palazzo Antinori Firenze" All are 750 ml bottles.

Bottle #1 EST!! EST!! EST!!! 1978 Bottle #2 Orvieto Classico 1978 Bottle #3 Villa Antinori Bianco Toscano White 1978 Bottle #4 Villa Antinori Chianti Classico 1975

A couple of friends claim the set is worth $2000+ with one over $300 alone.

Is this true or are they just pulling my leg?

Only # 4 have any hopes of being drinkable. 99% of the worlds white wines are history after 10 years much less 25.Neither Est Est est, or Orvieto are in the 1%.

1975 was a decent year for chianti, if it was a riserva it might still be decent but I'm afraid it peaked in the early 1980's if stored under 70 F. The best Antinori chianti bottling back then was the Marchese di Antinore Chianti Classico Riserva. In the the 1980's I had some from 1955 and 1958 that were the definition of what older red wines should be.

As to the monetary worth--don't quit your day job. Pop the bottles & see for yourself, just get a few younger bottles in case all are bad. And please post your notes here.

Sell it at half price to them.

Seriously, these bottles are of curiosity value only and are 100% undrinkable. Also the red, which I bet is *not* the Riserva.

Joe is right, any dry white wine from Italy would have more than one foot in the grave after a quarter of a century. Avoid that offer by all means...

Antinori

over

It also occurs to me that "the set is worth $2000+ with one over $300 alone" is a very strange claim. It implies that the $300 is more than each of the others are worth, but it leaves $1700 for the other three, so at least one of them would be worth well over that $300.

I called up one of the local 5 star restaurants & they said the same thing. Oh well I did get a barter offer for them but wanted to give them as a gift. Now that I know they are junk I'll look for a better gift & take the barter.

Thanks Ike

Said this, I agree that the value of the whole set of bottles is almost zero.

No, I agree. Of course that's not the rule. I didn't say "Chianti is...," but "*the* Chianti is...," referring only to this particular Chianti.

"Chianti

OK--not a problem.
