Kongsgaard

Has anybody tried any of their wines? I first heard of them last Fall when they were part of a high end CA Chardonnay tasting in Austin last Fall. I just got a copy of their current release letter. Wow, talk about ambitious pricing. Their "regular" 2006 Chardonnay is $75. Their 2006 Judge Vineyard Chardonnay is $175. They even have a 2006 Syrah for $150. Given the way I feel about Syrah, that has to be the most ridiculous bottle price in the history of CA wine. Jim Mehl

I've been drinking his wines for years and would agree that the pricing might be aggressive but imho, worth the price. These are full throttle wines with power and finesse. His wines generally need a few years to evolve but the chardonnay rivals many French Grand Cru white burgs. If you want ridiculous pricing buy a bottle of Opus at $160- $180 for fairly non discript Napa cabernet.

I did manage to locate a bottle of the 2005 Kongsgaard Chardonnay. I completely agree with you about "full throttle with power". However I'm not so sure about the "finesse" part. I've never had a French white burg this big. That is a criticism the French often make about CA Chards. Too big and lacking in finesse. There is no question that the Kong is a fascinating wine. I just don't think it makes a very good food wine. At least I couldn't think of anything it might pair with.
