Kurt Darting Durkheimer Steinberg Muskateller Spatlese 1999

A large part of this apparently came from eiswein grapes that didn't meet the must weight requirements and were classified as Spatlese. Bright golden yellow in colour with a great nose showing lots of tropical fruits, some flowers and a cotton candy note. The mouthfeel is round and rich with lots of sweet tropical fruits, honey, some citrus and a faint oily note on the palate. Moderate but adequate acidity balances the sweetness, which pairs very well with spicy food and cheeses. I had some a couple of nights ago after dinner, paired with some great pecorino romano cheese and the sharp/salty flavour of the cheese worked very well with the wine - the following evening had leftovers alongside some slightly spicy Indian food, and the pairing worked superbly. A really nice wine, and for $16 a staggering value. I just wish this wasn't the last bottle on the shelf at Howard's cellar, else I'd be heading back for more.

Cheers,

Salil

Darting seems to have a good touch with the non-Riesling grapes (my fave Darting is generally the Rieslaner Auslese) I'd say adequate acidity is all one could hope for with 1999 and Muscat, sounds pretty good. At $16 a very good deal. Thanks for nice notes.
