The wine is Nigl Kremser Freiheit Gruner Veltliner 2006 qualitatswein Trocken "L" N2608/06. This is the first modern trocken GV that I have had, so ranking with other modern GV would be meaningless. The color was very light yellow with perhaps a bit of green. The wine has considerable quince or melon like fruit with a bit of peppery spice. There is sufficient acidity, but it is not harsh, even at this young age. There was much more body than I was expecting from the light color. The wine is rather ripe and hints at a touch of sweetness, although completely dry. The summer 2006 was very hot, but the quality of the grapes was reported to be very high in much of Austria, although yields often were low. I wonder how this wine would taste from a more typical year. Anyway, the ripeness for 2006 helped this trocken, which might have had much more bite and some harshess if from an average or slightly cool year.
