Rabbit Ridge anyone?

Just came back from a tasting trip in the Paso Robles area. I had heard of and seen Rabbit Ridge wines in my local stores so we decided to stop by for a visit. It's a very large rather fancy styled building from the outside. The tasting room was inside the barrel storage room and was pretty simple at best.

We tasted all their wines and I gotta say, they ALL were horrible!! In Rabbit Ridges defense their prices were low ($40/case for some). I just gotta ask if anyone really likes their wines? I think Fetzer box wine is better!

Rabbit Ridge used to make some damn fine Zinfandel back when they were based in Sonoma. One legal battle over building violations later, they relocated to Paso and were never heard from again. I dunno if they changed hands, or just took a different approach to winemaking, but I've heard next to nothing about them and haven't seen one of their wines around here in several years.

They were the "go to" low end zin, along with Cline, when we moved to SF in '97. IIRC it was like $5-6 US a bottle, and a good mouthful of zin fruit at twice the price.

Some years back (late 90s) we tasted there. They had lots of different varietals but I was unimpressed with any of them. Curiosity got the better of me for some wines I'd never heard of, but at home I was not thrilled either.

Yes, Rabbit Ridge has gone down the toilet in quality.

Cline is WAY above anything from Rabbit Ridge. I find most Cline wines very good for the price. Nothing great but decent Zins and a decent price.

Back when Sue Selby was the winemaker for Rabbit Ridge, they did good Zins. Since her concentration on Selby wines, I found that they went downhill quickly, and have not purchased any lately.

Sorry to hear that they are all "horrible," is bad news.

Even at US$40/case, if the wine is undrinkable, it is not a value wine.

Cline has always been good producer, in my book. They are one of the few producers, who do 100% varietals. OK, some are not what they might have been with a bit of judicious blending, but they have the vision to do 100% and seem to keep those wines as true to character, as is possible.

Selby is one of my favorite Zins.
