I've discovered the 2004 Altos Las Hormigas Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) for about $9 at my local food co-op and have really enjoyed it. A cursory review of this wine on the Internet suggests that it has been well-received by critics. I'm interested in trying some other malbecs, and have seen some other Argentinian malbecs in addition to a few Chileans on local shelves. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Good day, sir. Finally, a wine-related question! I have only tried one Malbec, produced by San Telmo of Argentina. It was a steal at only $7.99 in PA State stores. Quite enjoyable.

If you can find the Altos Las Hormigas Malbec in PA State stores, you ought to try it. It's a nice, simple, fruity medium-bodied wine. I'll be on the lookout for the San Telmo here in Washington State, but if I can't find it I'll look for it when I go back to Pennsylvania to visit my family in March.
I've not tasted any Chilean Malbec, that I liked, however, almost EVERY Mendoza Malbec was both a good wine, and a good value. I'm sure there are some "dogs" in the bunch, but have not found them. That said, I'm sure there are some drinkable Chilean Malves too, but I have not found them.

I used to rate Norton Malbec very highly but I can't remember why..........shoulda kept more notes :-(. I haven't tasted it for many vintages but I remember that it was inexpensive (5 ukp-ish) and was a top fave when I first started to *apply* myself to the wine experience. I tasted all the Malbecs I could find back then and Norton's won every time except for one Cahors which I suspect had a spot of another grape in it. Incidentally, I particularly dislike Malbec now. It reminds me of Rhubarb. Probably something to do with the naturally uniquely high Malic acid content. That said, I love Sherry :-). I guess that you're in the states, in which case it's probably even cheaper than it is here. Worth a try :-).

For that price range.. you should probably go for Piattelli Premium Malbec. 91 from Robert Parker is a sign of a good wine, right?
