Roogle Kirkland Shiraz

I was really amazed when I found that Marquis Philips, not my favorite winemaker, makes this my daughter's favorite everyday Shiraz - and one I find to be a good QPR at 9.99US. It has enough structure to go with most red meat with a little subtlety. I have seen a lot of wine at twice the price fail miserably.

Kirkland Champagne at $25 is quite nice as well. Last weekend the first bottle was a bit off, not corked I think as my wife didn't notice, more like what beer people call skunky but only just a hint, second bottle was nice in a yeasty way, crisp very light apple/citrus notes went well with appetizers and a cold chicken breast with sun dried tomatoes, basil and goat cheese filling. (tomoatoes were a background note only)

Joseph, Do you mean Sparky Marquis? Marquis Phillips was a joint venture between him and the importer Dan (?) Phillips of Grateful Palate. That collaboration is over, though the Marquis Phillips name lives on, and Mr. Marquis has gone on to found Mollydooker, which I would guess would not be a winery to find favor in the Coulter household.

Thanks for the notes, BTW.

Mark, It is indeed Grateful Palate whose name is on the bottle. Mystery sort of solved. Thank you.

Joseph, Do you know if the Kirkland branded Roogle is the same as the general Marquis Philips Roogle? Costco can't sell wine in Pennsylvania but the PA Wine and Spirits store does carry the Marquis Phillips branded wine.

Thanks, Jon

JOn not sure, but the bottle has a red label, front has a picture of the Kangaroo with an eagle's head and a label above that looks like a ticket (zig zagy things on side)

Hope this helps. (Kirkland bottle does mention Grateful Palate, R Wines and is noted as Master Cask Series VII)

Thanks Joseph. For $10 it's worth a try.

I picked up a bottle and gave it a try. I was a bit underwhelmed.

It was a very concentrated wine with some blackberry and cedar, but had little in the way of aroma and a very short finish. The overall effect was not to my liking. I'll revisit it this evening to see if time open improves it a bit.

Looking on the Grateful Palate web site I believe this is the 'Baby Roogle' I purchased at the PA State store, and not the Master Cask Series. I'm tempted to find one of their better offerings in New Jersey or Delaware and give that a try.

Thanks for the notes Joseph.
