Sams Wine Warehouse

Well, we finally had the opportunity to drive down to Chicago to check out the Sams Wine Warehouse.

Wow, what a place! We spent about 1 1/2 hour there and I was barely able to check out the Spanish wines, the Bordeaux section, part of the Rhone wines, the California Petite Sirahs and a quick pass through the California Cabs.

I guess I was lucky to not have enough time to check out the rest, my Visa sure took a hit.

I got extremely lucky for my first visit there. Yesterday they had a special sale of 10% off on all wines. I don't know if it's normal for the store or part of their sale, but they also had several tasting stations set up. I must have sampled close to 40 different wines. The tastings ranged from non vintage California wines from Barefoot Vineyard to a tasting of the 1997 Bighorn Vineyards Napa Valley Cab. They were also tasting assorted Australian wines and Spanish Cavas along with several other varietals and styles of wines.

This was my first visit, and it won't be my last.

Thanks to all of those that had previously recommended this fine establishment.

You hit most of their strengths, though their Zinfandel and Alsace selections are also quite impressive -- and they don't do badly with Antipodean wines, either!

Yup, between there and the "Whole Paycheck" market nearby, that's a costly stop for us when in town. The first time we visited there, we came home to a message from our credit card company, wanting to make sure that the anomalously large charges made in Chicago were legit! LOL

Every weekend they have tasting stations set up, and they also organize much more formal tastings. If you haven't, you should sign up for their mailing list. I now get e-mail alerts when some of my favorite wines arrive. That's a great service for those of us who don't live nearby.
