I'm traveling to South Africa in a few weeks and will be in the Cape Town area. I plan to spend some time visiting the wine regions. Any suggestions on wineries I should visit?
Thanks,
DT

There may be worse wines produced in South Africa than those from KWV, but I don't know of any. Do a Google search of S. A. wineries and make your own intelligent choice.

The key regions close to Cape Town city are Stellenbosch (the closest, some
50 km west); Franschoek and Paarl, further to the west or northwest, so a rental car is mandatory (don't consider public transport!)Although it is some time since I was in South Africa (and I echo the sentiments - I was somewhat underwhelmed by SA wines) I did enjoy my winery visits.
Firstly, both the settings , surrounded by the Groot Drakenstein mountains, and, in many cases the architecture (Cape Dutch) was spectacular .
Boschendal (Franschoek)
The Bergkelder, near Stellenbosch)
Delheim, situated in Simonsberg (nr Stellenbosch) dates back to the 1600s - I did like their wines.
Both Nederberg
Groot Constantia is another heritage site, more of a museum, but vitually in the Cape Town city limits.
If you have an interest in gardening or have a botanical bent, then do not miss Kirstenbosch National Gardens - also in Cape Town.
Obviously, you will do the Table Mountain thing - go on! walk!
Alongside San Francisco and Sydney, Cape Town rates as one of the worlds great harbour cities (IMNSHO of course)
