Paso Robles Trip

I will be heading to Paso Robles in a couple of weeks and would appreciate any suggestions of "don't miss" places to visit. I have the brochure from the local chamber that lists all of the wineries in the area but with a few exceptions (Peach Canyon, Turley, Justin) I'm not too familiar with the area-hence the reason for the trip. Thanks to all for your suggestions

What type of wines do you enjoy? Here are my favorites. Tobin James Meridian (They taste limited production wines, not the mainstream stuff) Midnight Cellars Dark Star Wild Coyote (Unbelievable Syrah)

Where are you coming from? South of Paso Robles are numerous wineries around Atascadero, San Lois Obispo, Santa Maria and Solvang.

Of the ones that I've visited, my favorites are Tablas Creek, Turley, L'Aventure, Garretson and Linne Calodo.

Also add in Mimi. They are making a great Syrah right now.

That's a good plan. From SLO, you can easily hit not only Paso, but also the wine regions of Santa Barbara County (aka "Sideways" country). By car, it's about 30 minutes to Paso and 30-60 minutes to the major wine regions of SB county. Paso is renowned for its reds (Zin and Syrah mostly and Bordeaux varietals at Justin). In SB county, you'll get good Pinot Noirs.

Have fun! Mark Lipton

Wow you have gotten some really great suggestions I would also agree with the Linne Calodo and Garretson suggestions. Linne Calodo is my favorite in the area. I would also suggest Denner, which is fairly new (only been open to the public for about a year), they make some great wines be sure to try the 'ditch digger' a Grenache syrah Mouvedre blend. I am also very fond of Villicana and Dover Canyon. You might check out Chateau Margene or Rio Seco as well (they are both on the Eastern side of the 101).

Be sure to go to dinner at Villa Creek on the square they are also in the wine business and make some great rhone varietal blends ( Willow Creek Cuvee being among my favorites.)

Just have a great time,

Robyn

Cindy and I just returned from our third visit to Paso Robles in as many months. We visited 90 of the wineries open to the public and sampled just under 500 wines. We have a book coming out in about two weeks entitled The Grape Escapes -- The Best of Paso Robles Wineries and Tasting Rooms. You can check out our website at
