I found a couple of great threads on the 2005 German wine vintage... mostly Auslese and higher... heavily botrytised. Very interesting reading (for the most part)... more so for the weather earlier this fall and the winemaker's stress over rot and timing... and less so for the effect that reduced yields will have on prices. Importers must be fearing another 1976 repeat with reduced yields and wines that could skew the market's expectations of what German wines are typically like. Just received an email from a weingut in the Rheingau that included the following note:
"The 2005 will be generally different from 1976. In 76 all wines from Spätlese on had the typical taste of botrytis. In the 2005 vintage this taste will be seen in BA and TBA only, as pratcially all the Spätlese and Auslese were picked before that [October] rain day and had no botrytis."

Some news clippings from Germany: Wein-plus of Nov. 25th , tells that top wineries compare 2005 with 1976,
1947 and even 1921. Quantities are down by 20% it said, and also that the most satisfied growers were those of Rheingau, Nahe and Mosel. The Wegeler winery at Rheingau reported must weights of up to 309 degrees.. Small price increases are expected. Wein-plus, Nov. 7th, reports that unusual quantities of BA's and TBA's have been harvested at the Mosel, average Oechsles being 130 and 180 respectively. President Adolf Schmitt of the winery association claimed this year to be the equal of 1976. The success of this late harvest means that most vintners will abstain from the risky attempt of making an Eiswein this year. (The Hessische Staatsweingueter reported that grapes set aside for a possible Eiswein had been devoured by a herd of wild boars...! Had there been any wine made (yet no sufficient cold) it would have amounted to about
