Betsy told me she was making fettucine with goat cheese and mushrooms for Friday dinner. Goat cheese makes me think Loire SB, so I opened the
2002 Michel Bailly "Les Loges" Pouilly-Fumé. The 3 G's -grapefruit, gooseberry, and grass. Wait a minute- make that 4 G's- thee's gunglint too. Vibrant acidity, rich ripe fruit, minerally finish. Really good wine, a B+/A-.
OK match, but just ok. I'm unsure if anything would have been a perfect match with this - too many competing flavors. There was the goat cheese, some sautéed portobellos, wilted radicchio, a parsley-shallot oil, sautéed spinach, and basil. Maybe a light red would have fared better with the other flavors, but would have clashed with the goat cheese. Hmm. Doesn't really matter- while good, Betsy thought it a bit too complicated for what should be a simple pasta dish.
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency
