TN '03 Girard Rive D'Or

Okay, I'll confess - I can sometimes be a shill for my local Sierra Foothils regions ... but here is yet another wine from the gold country that deserves a taste.

Couple months back a friend introduced us to this wine, and to the small winery just south of us in El Dorado County. We cellared a few bottles of this 2003 vintage blend of Cab Franc (44%), Cabernet Sauvignon (32%), Merlot (18%), and Malbec (6%).

Opened last night to accompany a sirloin steak meal. Wine was decanted about 45 minutes before serving.

The deep hued wine has a deceptive nose. At first seemingly non-descript, then revealing layers of dark fruit and a seductive earthiness. I suspect that the wine is a little closed yet, as it took another hour in the glass to reveal itself fully. Firm and full on the palate, the tannins softened perfectly with the steak, but might be a bit harsh if sipped without a meat to accompany. Medium long finish with an almost semi-sweet chocolate impression.

Two paws up from the Beagle for this excellent QPR from the Sierra Foothills. Available direct from the winery

The wine will probably continue to improve with another year or two in the cellar - but is excellent now, at least in the company of a good steak.

Hoping to get down to the winery soon for some tastings .. they also offer a Vio / Rousanne blend, a Mourvedre, and a "Rhone blend" that all hold interest.
