TN: 2 good 2004s- Margaux & Saar

Betsy was out for the evening visiting friends up the river; I placed a small tritip steak on the grill, and enjoyed with the 2004 Ch. du Tertre (Margaux). Floral ripe nose, summer flowers and crushed berries. On the palate cassis with an edge of black raspberry. There are firm but ripe tannins, balanced acidity, excellent length. There is some vanilla/new oak, but it is moderate and stays mostly in the background. This is modern and ripe, but not at all over the top. Maybe the best 2004 Bdx I've opened to date (haven't tried my Leo- Barton yet). Don't really get a chance to watch this develop over evening as I had saved half into a 375 immediately after opening. At $25 a bottle a very good deal. B+/A-

It was a scorcher, so while grilling and after dinner I had a couple of glasses of nice cold Riesling. The wine was the 2004 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Kabinett. Sweet lime and peach, zippy acidity yet with a broad base, nice minerally finish. Lovely and long, better than the '05 for my tastes. A-/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency

The 2004 isn't a bit young? That is a great price point though and sounds like one to seek oput.

Sure it's young, but I usually drink classified Bordeaux in one of two ways: a bottle or two early on, within 18 months of release, generally with ye old hunk of steak. Gives me a sense of if I want to order more, a hint of how it might age, etc. Assuming I think it can age, I generally ignore from age 4 till 11-12 years after vintage, to try and avoid closed wines. Certainly that's not a hard and fast rule, some vintages never really shut down ('97, '99), others need more than 11-12 years ('86). And of course different wines perform differently. But I'd rather drink a tannic young red(which I don't mind with rare meat), than cellar something w/o any idea of how it was young,.

Good point. So since it was an A-B+ was it cellarworthy.

Well, I guess it would be possible to have an A-/B+ wine that was very tasty but "drink now", but in this case at this price I'd say yes. I already have a few bottles of this coming, might grab another one or two while they're $25. . I don' t think this is a 25 year wine, but I'm guessing I'll find pretty tasty in 10-12 more years

Bordeaux VALUE BUSTER!!! Sometimes you just can't get enough of the good stuff and sometimes you just get way too much of the good stuff. When we tasted these two wines, we were floored by price and quality ratio; as a result, we ordered way too much wine. These wines are truly great values for the quality and today they are the ultimate: BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!!
