TN: 96 Ridge Pagani Ranch

For my 55th, at a great little BYOB in Blue Bell PA (Alison's).

We started with a Mumm Napa Cuvee Blanc de Noir. This really exceeded my expectations - lovely salmon color, cherry and bread with a hint of caramel on the palate.

Then on to the Ridge; I had stashed this away for a special occasion and forgot about it for a while: garnet, starting to brick just slightly. Wonderful intense nose of vanilla, cherry. anise and plum, with a touch of earth and barnyard. Cherry, plum and blackberry fruit on the palate, with earth and cedar in the background. Tannins fully resolved. Luscious, harmonious and elegant. I am in awe of the beauty of these Ridge field-blend Zins, and this vineyard in particular: not only are they great in their youth, but they age with incredible grace. Would that I could have afforded a few more of these!

Regards, Dean

Nice to run across this here... I've just become infatuated with Ridge wines. I own, but have yet to taste, a couple of bottles of the '98 Pagani Ranch. Any experience with that one? I'm wondering when that'll be optimally ready to drink (or whether it has already reached its prime).

Thanks, Ed. I can't see any evidence that you're drinking too much Ridge! It's really something... Sounds like I'll have to find an occasion to uncork one of those '98 Paganis soon.

By the way, perhaps you can clear this up for me: when people talk about aging wine, saying, for example, "I prefer to drink Ridge Zins after five to eight years," are they using the vintage year or the bottling date (which can be a couple of years later) as the starting point?
