TN Bertani Amarone 1967

I still have a very few bottles of Bertani Amarone Ruecioto Valpolicella from 1963, 1964, and 1967. All have been stored properly by me since shortly after release. The 64 long was the largest and most impressive of this trio, but it is now becoming too old for my taste with hints of oxidation in the last bottle tasted. Although still worth drinking, the

64 was much better a few years ago. The 63 was a quite decent wine, but it suffered on direct comparison with the 64 a few years ago. It too should have been consumed. I have kept only 1 bottle of the 63 and 64 to see how they fade away.

The 1967 just tasted is not as intense as the 64, and did not impress as much on drect comparison a few years ago. However at this point, it is a better wine than the 64. I detected no hint of oxidation. It still has a deep color. There is considerable complexity in bouquet and taste with the usual Amarone characteristics. It now has smoothed, there still is ample fruit with hints of dry fruit, and the tannins are smoothed. There is the right amount of acid. Although a bit lighter than the superstars from the best years, it is a very pleasing wine to drink alone or with food.
