TN: Great Savigny and good Touraine

We were pretty pooped when we got back from Nice Monday , but after some hound reunion time I went to office. Betsy was happy to have her kitchen back, and prepared dinner. She almost had the ziti with shrimp and scallops ready when I returned, I took a quick dash to basement. Hmm, no crisp Italians, how about a Sauvignon Blanc? Out of NZ, here's a '06 CRB Touraine, but I wasn't so thrilled with that. Here's another. Wait, I only bought 2, and drank one. Closer inspection reveals it is the 2005 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Sauvignon. Let's throw in ice and give this a go. I like this more than the 2005- good bright acidity, grapefruit with melon and wild strawberry, just a hint of grass. Some flint on finish. Very good, too bad I only had the one. B/B+

Tuesday I caught up at work, came home to find Betsy preparing a sage/ garlic baste and some mushrooms. She sent me outside to grill the pork chops with the basting sauce, while she finished the mushrooms and some asparagus. Wine was the 2004 Pavelot "aux Guettes" Savigny les Beaunes. This was pretty shy at first - good dark cherry fruit, but more dominated by some tannins. Eased up a bit with air, a nice midweight Burg to accompany the dish. Red cherries and plums, a little vanilla. Wwe went out for a little while, I returned the Savigny when we got back. Wow, the pleasant little Burg was showing much more now. Rich cherry fruit, some Chinese Fve Spice and a hint of hickory logs on the fire. Now I regretted that pleasant glass with dinner. Going to put my other bottles away for about 5 years to try and see where this goes. The final glass gets an A-.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency
