TN: Schloss Schonborn 2002 Spatburgunder Trocken

Back Label Information: Gutsabfullung Domanenweingut Schloss Schonborn Hattenheim/Deutschland Qualitatswein A.P. Nr. 31.052.046.03 Rheingau 12.5% Alc. $15.50 USD

With Teriyaki Pork Chops, Sweet Potato Slices and Broccoli with Cheese

Very dark red, think strawberries. Nose of cherries and sweet perfume. For the first .5 sec, no taste, then cherries and red berry fruit. I also get just a hint of oak.

Very soft with a lasting finish.

I am guessing that this wine would not cellar long?

Pinot Noir (known as Spaetburgunder in Germany) has been grown in the Rheingau a very long time. Assmannshauser Hoellenberg is the most famous single vineyard for Pinot Noir there. Your wine likely is a blend of wines from various vineyards somewhere near or at Assmannshausen. These Pinot Noirs tend to be quite light compared with Burgundy. I expect your wine should be consumed fairly soon while it is fresh and is unlikely to improve much, if any, with age. Now and then the weather is such that the Pinot Noir can reach extreme ripeness. Then some auslese sweet Pinot Noir is produced which is a real shock to those who have never tasted a sweet Pinot Noir. Some of the more Southern areas of Germny now produce a little Pinot Noir that is fuller and more like Burgundy.
