TN: Wines by Hudson- Bdb, Muscadet, MSR, roses, Syrah, CS

No wine Tuesday at an upscale new Mexican place in Irvington (crab salad wi th corn and cojita, squid with a chipotle sauce, pastor huaraches, chile re lleno), but Wednesday met with some friends at the park for concert. Betsy made a shrimp and soba salad with chili oil, I did kohlrabi/apple slaw, we had charcuterie, cheeses, and more.

NV Delacroix Blanc de Blancs Brut Apples, citrus rind, simple but good crispness. Unsure where in France this is from, but decent QPR as it’s $7. B-

2014 Pepiere “Gras Moutons” Muscadet Nice citrus and apple fruit, firm acidic backbone, minerally finish. Lovely wine. B++

2012 Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Thanisch) Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Spatlese Nice balance, open, the light sweetness makes it a nice foil to the chili o il. Granny smith, lime zest, and a touch of petrol. Very long finish, very easy to drink. Sure this could age but might not in my cellar. I haven? ??t bought an Erben-Thanisch in years, need to keep eyes open. B+/A-

2016 Edmunds St John “Bone Jolly” Gamay rose Red cranberry/raspberry note, a little hint of bitter cherry, lots of body but not heavy, good acids. Fun. B+

2016 Henriette Cotes de Provence Weird bottle shape (Ott meets plastic bear honey bottle), darker than some CdProvence roses, but with less flavor. Somewhat dilute, but I guess inoffe nsive. C+/B-

(NV but I think Fred said 2016) La Grande Colline “Le Canon? ? “Natural” wine from a Japanese winemaker in the Rhone. Syra h. Meaty nose, perky, with that no-sulphur floral note, bright and fun. B

2014 Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Would you like some vanilla extract and Blue Slurpee syrup with your wine, sir? Sweet, low acid, just not my style. C+

There was also a Red Newt Riesling that I skipped as I've tried several tim es.

Fun night with spectacular sunset over Palisades.

No wine Thursday with teriyaki salmon, collards, and rice.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a p arty where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivi ty, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I've found this bottling a tad softer than the others in the past. Any sign of it in this vintage? I love every '14 I've had from Pepiere, so perhaps a riser tide lifts all boats.

I have one bottle remaining of the stash of 4 I got from Steve back when I picked up his library wines. For my money, this is as good as many Cru Beaujolais and unquestionably the finest American Gamay I've yet tried.

Thanks for the interesting notes, Dale.

Don't really have experience with other vintages, but here I'd say the acid s are definitely there, it's just that the fruit component is more prominen t than in say regular or Briords, which makes it come across a little softe r.

rry/raspberry

Note that this was the Bone Jolly rose. Both are good stuff!

Look out for Blue Mountain gamay from the southern Okanagan in British Columbia. Decanter's Stephen Spurrier wrote that it was the best gamay he'd had outside Beaujolais. They make a pretty good PN too. Graham

Thanks, Graham. My mother was a big fan of Okanagan Pinot Noirs, but I've yet to try anything from there. Road trip definitely called for :)

Oh, right you are. Yes, I had a bottle of the rosé in that stash, too, and loved it (as usual).

The Okanagan Pinots are pretty good but I would still consider them a work in progress. The area is definitely worth a road trip.

I tried recently to get some Blue Mountain PN but only the magnums were available at my local store. Graham
