TN: Aligote, former Cava, Loire SB, Gamay, roses

An overnight thunderstorm brought in cooler drier air, and we had great wea ther for final riverfront park concert of the year. Good friends, good musi c, nice breeze, and a great sunset over the Palisades. We carried rillettes , salmon, coppa, cheeses, a kale salad, and more.

2014 Raventos “de Nit” (Conca del Riu Anoia) Fine bead, nice mousse, crisp. Strawberries and cranberry with a lemon twis t, totally dry. Good mineral finish. Ordered a case from Astor sale when I got home. B+

2015 de Villaine Bouzeron Aligote Ripe citrus and a little peach, as long an Aligote as you’ll ever f ind. B+

2016 Horse and Plow Rose Organic Carignan grapes. I was excited to try this , but this is rather plo dding (guess the plow really slows the horse). Tastes like generic overcrop ped Languedoc rose you’d find at a warehouse wine store for $7. C+

2016 Pomponette Rose (Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence). Crisp light style, red fruits, light herb notes, fun. B/B+

2015 Lapierre Raisins Gaulois Good acids but richer than usual for RG (‘15 showing) , raspberry f ruit with herbs and a grapey note. Fun. B

2015 Puzelat-Bonhomme Sauvignon Lightly grassy, grapefruit and melon, pretty tasty. B

Good night.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a p arty where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivi ty, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Much as I've tried, I've not been able to find much love for Aligoté. In my experience, it's come across as a charmless grape. YMMV of course.

I learned my lesson from the '09 vintage. I don't buy Gamay in ripe years like this as they fail to conform to what we value in Gamay: lightness on the palate and a bright, red fruit profile. (I also learned from '05 to not go long on '15 Burgundy -- I might not live long enough to see them come around)

Well, 95% of Aligote is charmless and best used for Kir. But I like Ente, Roulot, de Villaine, and sometimes Lafarge. Coche-Dury as well, but only if someone else is paying!

Well, this was certainly light and bright, and red fruited. I know some '09 s were just too atypical, but others (and some '15s) are fine by me.
